Nice crisp copies in contemporary sprinkled calf, gilt backs (some wear to extremities). armorial bookplate of British diplomat and politician Robert Darcy, fourth Earl of Holdernesse [1718-78]. Second Edition (first: 1756). An important diplomatic history by one of the major participants. The author negotiated the 1700 treaty that occasioned the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-14), whereby Louis XIV's grandson, Philippe, duc d'Anjou was named heir to the Spanish throne by the dying Charles II of Spain. He was also the leading French diplomat at the series of international conferences that resulted in the Treaty of Utrecht (1713) and the Treaty of Rastatt (1714). The work is divided into four sections, the first devoted to the negotiations for the Spanish Succession, the second to negotiations with Holland, the third to negotiations with England, and the fourth to negotiations for the Treaty of Utrecht, by which France ceded to England all claim to the Hudson's Bay Territory, Acadia, St. Kitts, and Newfoundland. Voltaire remarked that the memoirs "renferment des détails qui no conviennent qu'à ceux qu veulent s'instruire à fond; on y reconnaît le gout de la cour de Louis XIV; mais leur plus grand prix est dans la sincérité de l'auteur: c'est la moderation elle-même qui conduisait sa plume. Including numerous references to America: fishery rights on the coast of Newfoundland, the slave trade, the disastrous 1711 Walker expedition against Quebec, &c. Not in Sabin.
